Army sweethearts celebrate 70 years' of marriage

A GHA couple marked a major milestone recently by celebrating 70 years of marriage.

Tenants Sydney and Mary Lomas celebrate 70 years' of marriage

Sydney and Mary Lomas, 92 and 91 respectively, who live in Scotstoun, celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.

The couple met – and later got married – while they were both serving in the armed forces in Egypt.

Sydney joined the Army and was a clerk in the Duke of Wellingtons, and Mary gave up her job as a telephonist to be a nursing auxiliary in WRAC.

After serving in the armed forces, they moved back to Glasgow, to Kingsway Court, when the blocks were first built in 1964.

They lived there for 26 years before moving to Northland Drive, Scotstoun.

The couple – who have a daughter who lives in California and one granddaughter – are still fit and active, but say they are so grateful to the concierges in their block for their support.

Mary said: “We really like living here.  The concierges are really helpful and it’s a lovely area.”

“It’s really helpful to know that we have the Handyperson service too.”

GHA’s Locality Housing Director Peter Smith said: “Sydney and Mary are a lovely couple who have had really interesting lives.

“It was a pleasure to present them with flowers to mark their anniversary.”
