Radon testing to begin in homes
Wheatley Homes will begin testing some of our properties for radon, a naturally occurring gas, this summer.
Radon is colourless, odourless, and tasteless. It is produced from the natural decay of uranium found in soil, rocks, and groundwater.
Radon can accumulate in homes and buildings, and testing is the only way to determine radon levels.
Other local authorities and housing associations across Scotland are carrying out similar testing.
If radon is detected, we will put in mitigation measures with minimal disruption.
Wheatley will contact tenants living in areas identified by the UK Health Security Agency as having potentially higher levels of radon.
The testing process involves placing two small radon detectors in the home for approximately 90 days. One detector is placed in the main living area, and the other is in the main bedroom.
After the testing period, the detectors will be collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis.
If the results indicate elevated radon levels, we will arrange to install air vents or other solutions at no cost to the tenants.
Wheatley staff will be available to provide support and answer any questions tenants may have before, during, and after the testing process. Additional information and guidance will also be provided.
