Lord Provost opens new community hall

A new community hall in Castlemilk is bringing older GHA tenants together and helping them socialise.

The Lord Provost opened a new community hall

The new Dougrie Sheltered Hall, in the Dougrie Terrace sheltered complex, will be a focal point for tenants there to socialise, arrange parties and other events.

Residents are planning a range of activities, including easy exercise classes and arts and crafts – and they’ve already organised a St Andrew’s Night celebration and a Christmas party.

The Lord Provost of Glasgow, Councillor Eva Bolander, was on hand this week to unveil a plaque to officially open the new facility.

Tenant Jim Hutchison, 73, who’s lived in Dougrie Terrace for nine years, said: “There’s been a real need for this kind of facility here.

“It will be a great way for people to get to know each other and create a real community. We’ll use it for all sorts of activities, such as exercise classes.

“It will be good to get people away from watching TV in their rooms, get active and get to know their neighbours. We’ve already arranged a St Andrew’s Night party and a Christmas party.”

The Lord Provost said: “I’m delighted to have been invited to open this wonderful facility. I’m sure everyone in Dougrie Terrace will enjoy the space and will look forward to holding many happy events, activities and celebrations here.

“It’s so important to have somewhere people in a sheltered housing complex can congregate, enjoy social activities and feel the benefits of the community they live in.”

The Dougrie Sheltered Hall was built by City Building (Glasgow), which is jointly owned by Wheatley Group, GHA’s parent organisation.

The hall also includes a kitchen, a staff office and a laundry room. It is wheelchair-friendly and has dementia-friendly features, including easy-to-open doors and wide corridors.
