Tenants at one of GHA’s new-build developments were joined by some special volunteers and friends at a 'Meet Your Neighbours' barbecue.

Ex-armed forces veterans from Govan’s Coming Home Centre volunteered to cook burgers, hot dogs and veggie wraps at the event which was held to welcome residents to their new community in Tarfside Oval in Cardonald.

The veterans from the project, which is part funded by GHA, even brought their own barbecue which they had borrowed from the Navy ship, The HMS Dalriada.

GHA staff were on hand to help the neighbours from the 51 new homes get to know each other and to answer any of the tenants’ questions.

Young people also had a great time with an afternoon of colourful face painting and Councillor Elaine McSporran and Councillor Alex Wilson also joined in the fun.

Mohamad Al Shamari, whose two children Fadak and Ali attended the event, said: “The Meet Your Neighbours event is a wonderful idea. We enjoyed the entertainment, meeting our neighbours and the children are making new friends.”

Local resident Anne Marie McKenna added: “The event was very good and a great way to get know everyone. I really enjoyed the barbecue.”

The 51 homes at Tarfside Oval have been built on the site of the former multi-storey blocks. They are a mix of flats, semi-detached and terraced houses with five of them fully wheelchair accessible.

The event was jointly organised by Wheatley's charitable trust, The Wheatley Foundation.
